The Unggoy- AKA: Grunts
Grunts are a species of squat bipedal arthropods that were a member of the Covenant, but now serve the Elites. They were the lowest-ranking species in the Covenant, and were frequently mistreated by almost every higher-ranking race. Grunts are primarily used as laborers or, in combat situations, cannon fodder. They were one of the later races to be introduced into the Covenant, and were either the second or third Covenant species to be encountered by Humans.

Early History
Grunts were a dying race early in their history. Due to the collapse of the Biosphere on Balaho, Grunts frequently died either due to exposure, sickness, or starvation, due to lack of resources. Grunts freqeuntly killed their elders so the younger generation could survive on the limited resources. They were inducted into the Covenant as a slave race, but this proved to be the salvation of their race. Grunt life expectancy doubled and overall quality of life improved, despite their low status. At one point, the grunts rebelled against the Covenant, due to constant abuse and oversight, but this rebellion was quickly defeated.
Human-Covenant War
Grunts were frequently used as cannon fodder for the enemy. Despite being armed, Grunts are of little threat to any UNSC or ONI soldier on the field. They were expected to die for the Covenant, and they willingly, and joyfully, died for the Covenant, even going so far as to suicide bomb enemy targets.
Post Covenant Status
Grunts currently serve the Elites in their war against the brutes and ONI. However, they are used more for doing manual labour instead of fighting. The Elites do not wish to arm the Grunts due to the Elites not having the near infinite resources of the Covenant. In essence, the Grunts have been reduced back to their pre-uprising state.
Biology / Geneology
Grunts have been described as breeding very rapidly in many instances, with large egg clutches and short childhood periods. This might explain why there are so many of them on the battlefield. This combined with the large number of young per clutch and rapid sensory motor integration development was one of the primary reasons why the species were given the role of disposable cannon fodder. It is known that Grunts need to breath methan to survive. This explains the large methan tanks on their backs.
Physical Appearence
Grunts are short and stalky creatures. Their short legs combined with their weight makes them very slow moving infantry. They have 4 digits on their hands and seem to have what look like hooves for feet.
Personality / Behaviour
Grunts are very cowardly when isolated and alone. They have proven to be combative when in large groups, or in the company of a superior, such as an Elite or Brute. They seem to have a pack mentality shared only with other Grunts, only as a means to preserve their own cultural identity. They are also very grenade happy at times.
Director Vernette's Personal Notes
They are kind of like ants in most respects. They are militeristic, they travel in packs, and they derive strength from numbers. However, the moment you break their cohesion, they scatter and lose their heads, and killing them is no harder then shooting fish in a barrel. They seem competant when they have a superior around, but they are nothing more then cannon fodder. I swear, the only reason the Elite's use them is to waste our ammo.
However, none of this is to say they are not a threat. They can hold guns, and they can shoot, and that makes them dangerous. What is worse, is that inspite of how poorly they are treated, they will turn themselves into walking grenades and suicide bomb you. When I see this, I am always surprised. When a Grunt kills himself for his abusive and oppresive masters, I shake my head and laugh.
