Smell that? It's the smell of fresh game. Something.....new.
Something that is somewhat of a rarity.
I'm talking about westerns. in gaming.
While yes, Red Dead Redemption is a reboot of Red Dead Revolver (Also a good game)
Other than the "Dead Eye" Mechanic, they're both completely different games.
In either case, this game has been on my radar for far too long, for long have I craved a Grand Theft Auto Western, and who else to bring me my Grand Theft Auto Western, then the very innovators themselves.
Rock star Studios.
So let's look into this Clint Eastwood Wet Dream.
*Note, that this is not the final review, These are my first hours into the game, and my impressions, Thus, "Cuban Impressions"
1. Okay which side does the bullet come out of?
In the beginning of RDR, you get the standard fare of start out equipment.
-Knife
-Revolver
-Your Bare hands
And later on, you get my personal favorite, a Repeating Rifle.
THe aiming controls for me however, took a minute or two to figure out. I constantly found myself walking into town, and aiming at a nearby passerby.
Not only that, but the lock on system in RDR has been changed up a bit. Instead of just holding down the left trigger, and switching between targets, this time, the lock on system works similarly to Modern Warfare 2, where you lock onto the nearest enemy, and once said enemy is dead. you then have to manually readjust your sights.
This isn't bad by any means, I got the hang of it immidiately. and there's even a casual mode, Which Manly men like me don't need. I mean, pfft, so what, I died. a lot maybe. pfft.
It's a good asset.
2. 3 times the size of Liberty City? If only I knew better!
I was so hyped when Rock Star said that the world would be 3x the size of LIberty City.
And believe me it is.
AS I"m writing this Preview of RDR, I have my finger rapidly tapping A button to get to where I need to go. That place is all the way across the map.
You can't really blame Rock Star for making a BIG world, but still. It grains on the nerves. when you see the same cactus over and over again eyeballing you.
But the ailment for this is fast travel carriages. So problem solved.
Another thing to point out here is the superb graphics. The Draw Distances are astounding. and some of the environments are jaw dropping.
Ah what the hell, that Cactus looks good too.
3. Marston, Your a funny guy.
A thing to point out here is that John Marston's dialogue, is hilarious.
It's the fact that he's a Reformed Criminal, SUPER reformed criminal you can say.
He's gone off to live a normal family life, and this guy, has the vocabulary of a Grad Student.
And he's also pretty super polite. and coming from his background, is too much to bear.
This could either disconnect you from John Marston, or make you praise him. Personally, I praise him for his newfound vocabulary!
I've only scratched the surface of this game, and it still has me hooked, there's so much more to get into, multiplayer, The story in entirety, and other characters.
I'll be sure to go in depth with the written review.
