Robertson did as ordered and walked to the main entrance of the room. He stood out front, keeping his senses and shotgun sharp, ready for any trouble to come to him. He was, for all intents and purposes, cut off from the battlefield in the facility. He had no clue what the overall situation is, he didn't care too much either. To him, San Angeles has been hell since being deployed. One member down as well as an acting commanding officer. Two deaths that could have been prevented, and three injuries with the rest of Fireteam Harmony, two of which appeared critical.
Meanwhile:
Reynolds had come down to the Medbay to check on Fireteam Harmony. As he walked in, the Chief Medical Officer looked up and focused on what he was doing. The Doctor didn't want to be anywhere near Reynolds, terrified that he might actually be murdered in his own area.
Reynolds: "How are they, Doctor?"
The CMO looked up with a glare but dropped it out of respect for the chain of command.
CMO: "Private Cadieux is more or less fine. Several of her ribs were shattered, but with some pain killers, she'll be fine until we reach the next medical facility, so long as she doesn't hurt herself more."
As the Doctor was saying this, both him and Reynolds looked at Cadieux who was sitting up fine, listening to them talk.
CMO: "As for Corporal Axlon, his injuries were extensive. According to Private Cadieux, he was piloting the phantom when they crashed. His injuries are consistent with her story. His VISR had shattered and the shards from it were lodged in various parts of his face. Additionally, there was more glass shards that punctured his body armor all over his back. According to the Private, she helped stabilize his injuries before being rescued. I have full faith that if it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have made it."
Reynolds: "So he's going to be okay?"
CMO: "More or less, yes. He'll probably feel like he was hit by an assault carrier, but he'll be fine."
Reynolds: "What about Arman?"
CMO: "When she was brought in, her injuries were mostly head trauma. She lost a lot of blood from her injuries and the skin on the back of her scalp was torn off. I performed minor repairs, stitching it together. She'll be fine as long as the stitches hold."
Reynolds: "Are they fit to go back into combat?"
CMO: "With all due respect, Sir, they are not. You aren't seriously thinking of sending them back into combat, are you?"
Reynolds: "They're one of my best teams and San Angeles needs them. So yes, I am planning on it."
CMO: "You can't! I want at least 24 hours worth of observations for them."
Reynolds: "You have two. Get them back to fighting condition and have them report to me. Is Private Cadieux good to move around?"
The CMO was furious. He was tired of being run around with protocol and having Reynolds disregard his medical opinion.
CMO: "Captain Reynolds, I am the Chief Medical Officer aboard this ship. Under my authority as the Chief Medical Officer, I am ordering that Fireteam Harmony remain aboard the ship until I give the clearance otherwise."
Reynolds led the Doctor into his office adjacent to the medbay. Cadieux watched as the two men began to argue. Reynolds kept his voice low so Cadieux couldn't hear him.
Reynolds: "Doctor, let me make this very clear to you. Down there, Humans are dying by the dozens. We only managed to give them a break by performing some very unorthodox methods to push the Covenant off of the atmosphere. If Fireteam Harmony doesn't get back in the fight, along with everyone else you can stabilize until your two hours are up, then more people will die. I need my soldiers out there to fight."
CMO: "Captain, none of them are in any condition to return to the battlefield! What aren't you getting?"
Reynolds: "Doctor, I need people who can hold a gun and shoot on the surface. We have two cities that still need evacuations and not enough soldiers who can do it. As we speak, our ground forces are being re-prioritized. Get them ready for combat. Those are your orders, Doctor."
CMO: "No, they are not going to be deployed."
Reynolds: "Then as my right as Captain, I will formally dismiss you from your responsibilities. I will find a replacement and they will do as I ask. You will stay and assist in the recovery if you don't do as I'm telling you. Now go do your job, Doctor."
The CMO was dumbstruck. Never before had he faced such inconsideration and disregard for protocol. Nonetheless, he didn't want to leave everyone to their deaths so he succumbed to Reynolds.
CMO: "I will be bringing this up to HIGHCOM at first opportunity."
Reynolds: "If you wish, that's your right. Just get my people patched up and ready Doctor."
Reynolds walked out of the office and out of the medbay back to the bridge. The Doctor returned to his duties to do his best to fill Reynolds' quota.
