New! Halo RPG Fundamental Lore and Retcons

The following is a list of ideas and concepts that have been introduced into the NHRPG for story-telling purposes. Keep in mind that while the NHRPG strives to maintain total accuracy and compliance with the official lore, to the point where all story content is derived from the official lore, it has been necessary to RETCON several fundamental concepts, either altering or adding them, to allow more flexibility and fluidity win the NHRPG. These RETCONS were carefully discussed and debated to ensure as much loyalty as possible to the Halo lore, while at the same time, making a Halo RP possible, enjoyable, fun, and fluid. The following is a list of all RETCONS that were done to enable the NHRPG to function. As a result of these RETCONS, the NHRPG is defined as an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE.

  1. Class 0 Spartan IIs.

  2. The Trust Syndicate.

  3. ONI Section 0.

  4. Forerunners.

  5. Major Characters in the Lore.

  6. Major Events in the Lore.

  7. Major Locations in the Lore.

  8. Slipstream Travel.

1: Class 0 Spartan IIs

Class 0 Spartan IIs were introduced into the NHRPG in order to prevent any alteration or addition to the Class 1 Spartan II Project. Class 0 Spartan IIs were created by ONI Section 0 as precursors (or prototypes) to the Class 1 Spartan II Project. Class 0 Spartan IIs were classified by ONI Section 0, and their appearances in front line combat were rare, at best. Class 0 Spartan IIs worked more behind the scenes, out of sight from the rest of the military, answering only to the highest ranking members of ONI Section 0 or The Trust (based on their affiliation). There is no definitive list of Class 0 Spartan IIs, so the further addition of Class 0 Spartan IIs is easily accomplished without damage to the lore.

The use of Class 0 Spartan IIs is REQUIRED over the use of Class 1 Spartan IIs. The use of Class 1 Spartan IIs is PROHIBITED.

2: The Trust Syndicate

The Trust Syndicate is the antithesis to ONI Section 0, in the sense that anything ONI Section 0 can do, The Trust can match. The Trust Syndicate exists as a direct opponent to ONI Section 0. The Trust Syndicate makes it common practice to blend in with every branch of the military in an effort to maintain their technological equivalency. THis is especially true in the case of ONI Section 0. The Trust is NOT part of the UNSC, nor is it part of ONI, nor is is part of ONI Section 0. All of the activity that deals with Trust Operatives being involved with ONI or the UNSC is done in the strict context that these Trust Operatives in question are essentially spies and sleeper agents. The Trust's objectives, in the context of the narrative, can be best described as self-interested. Anything The Trust does MUST be done under the reasoning that it will strengthen The Trust, and enable them to better manipulate events from the safety of clandestine existence.

3: ONI Section 0

ONI Section 0 is the foremost contributor of advanced human technology for Humanity. Their technology is generally accepted as being far more advanced than what is typically used by the mainstream UNSC, and even the rest of ONI for that matter. ONI Section 0 has been granted more advanced technology to more easily facilitate activity in the NHRPG. The following types of characters are beneficiaries of ONI Section 0 technology:

  • ONI Section 0 Officers, and Agents

  • ONI Section 1, 2, or 3 Officers who are working under the supervision of an ONI Section 0 Operative, Officer, or Agent.

  • Specialized Battle Groups which contain at least one ONI Section 0 Officer or Agent with sufficient rank to command a Naval vessel.

ONI Section 0 tends to know more about the mysterious elements of of The Covenant, including their beliefs, their technology, their tactics, their rituals, and their more noteable members. Anyone who is part of ONI Section 0 has greater leverage with these concepts.

4: Forerunners

The Forerunners remain a total mystery to the VAST MAJORITY of the UNSC during the Human-Covenant war. This is not to say that tiny elements of the Forerunner dynasty will never bee seen. However, the vast majority of the information on The Forerunners will never fall into the hands of the UNSC. Storylines that contain the Forerunners as one of the centric plot devices is PROHIBITED. However, elements of the Forerunners is permitted on a case-by-case basis, and only with VERY good reason.

The use of Forerunner characters is PROHIBITED (until further notice).

5: Major Characters in the Lore

They do not exist. The NHRPG is an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. This means that characters, such as Lord Hood, Jacob Keyes, Masterchief, The Arbiter, any various others, play NO ROLE in the NHRPG. This is a measure that was taken to enable greater storytelling as well as preserve the official lore and canon. However, there is going to be an exceptions to this rule on an ongoing basis. The following is a list of exceptions to this rule, and the reason why:

  • Preston Cole - The existence of the Cole Protocol mandates his existence. However, interaction with this character is PROHIBITED.

  • Tartarus - Known as one of the preceding Chieftains of the Brutes.

Any confusion or uncertainty should be discussed and assess on a case-by-case basis. Generally speaking, NHRPG Characters tend to be the counter-parts to the actual lore characters.

6: Major Events in the Lore

Generally speaking all of the major events that happened in the Halo Lore DID happen. However, the characters involved with these event remain in question. Due to the fact that major characters in the actual lore do not exist in the NHRPG, the actual details of these events are obscure, at best. With that said, pivotal events, such as The Ark, Installation 04, Installation 05, and Requiem, are not eligible for use in the NHRPG as a staging ground and are considered PROHIBITED.

7: Major Locations in the Lore

There are only a few locations which are not permitted for use in the NHRPG. These events include:

  • Installation 04

  • Installation 05

  • The Ark

These are considered pivotal location in the lore, and as such, are PROHIBITED. They are not to be used in any way without very good reason to do so. Use of these locations for any reason should be discussed and assessed.

8: Slipstream Travel

The limitations behind Slipstream Travel have been retconned. For the sake of story telling and fluidity, the actual speeds of Slipstream Travel have been slightly adjusted from what the lore says. The following is a list of changes that have been made to Slipstream Travel:

  • Standard UNSC speeds

    • All years prior to, and leading up to, 2525

      • 500 Lightyears / Day

    • Each consecutive year after 2525 to 2552 (accounting for advancements in technology)

      • + 10 Lightyears / Day

    • After 2553, with the advent of Covenant Technology and Foreruner Technology being used in new designs

      • 900 Lightyears / Day

    • Each consecutive year after 2553 (accounting for advancements in technology)

      • +15 Lightyears / Day

  • Standard ONI Section 0 / Trust Syndicate speeds

    • All years prior to, and leading up to, 2525

      • 500 Lightyears / Day

    • Each consecutive year after 2525 to 2552 (accounting for advancements in technology)

      • + 15 Lightyears / Day

    • After 2553, with the advent of Covenant Technology and Foreruner Technology being used in new designs

      • 1000 Lightyears / Day

    • Each consecutive year after 2553 (accounting for advancements in technology)

      • +20 Lightyears / Day

  • Standard Covenant speeds

    • Prior to 2552

      • 3500 Lightyears / Day

    • Each consecutive year after 2525 to 2552 (accounting for advancements in technology)

      • + 35 Lightyears / Day

The general equation to calculat travel time is as follows:

Travel Time = (Distance Between Two Points x 33.4) / Total Speed

UNSC / ONI ONI Section 0 Trust Syndicate Covenant
Prior to 2525 500 LY / Day 500 LY / Day 500 LY / Day 3500 LY / Day
Increase Per Year
(2525 to 2552)
10 LY / Day 15 LY / Day 15 LY / Day 35 LY / Day
After 2552 1200 LY / Day 1500 LY / Day 1500 LY / Day 3500 LY / Day
Increase Per Year
(2553 onwards)
15 LY / Day 20 LY / Day 20 LY / Day 35 LY / Day

The general equation to calculat travel time is as follows:

Travel Time = (Distance Between Two Points x 33.4) / Total Speed

ONI Section 0 tends to know more about the mysterious elements of of The Covenant, Anyone who is part of ONI Section 0 has greater leverage with these concepts. Such concepts include:

  • The Covenant's religious beliefs.

  • The Covenant's technology and the mechanics behind it.

  • The Covenant's tactics and methods.

  • Specific rituals of specific races.

  • The identity of higher ranking Covenant soldiers and the more noteable members of The Covenant.

4: Forerunners

The Forerunners remain a total mystery to the VAST MAJORITY of the UNSC during the Human-Covenant war. This is not to say that tiny elements of the Forerunner dynasty will never bee seen. However, the vast majority of the information on The Forerunners will never fall into the hands of the UNSC so long as the time period disallows it. For example, UNSC Captains will have no knowledge of any specific Forerunner technology in the year 2530. However, by the year 2555, such knowledge would be common.

Named characters from the official lore do not exist in the NHRPG.

However, interaction with this character is PROHIBITED.

However, the characters involved with these events and the minor details behind these events remain in question. Due to the fact that major characters in the actual lore do not exist in the NHRPG, the actual details of these events are obscure, at best. With that said, pivotal events are not eligible for use in the NHRPG as a staging ground and are considered PROHIBITED. The following are examples of pivotal events:

  • The Battle of Installation 04

  • The Battle of Installation 05

  • The Battle of The Ark

  • The events pertaining Requiem.

7: Major Locations in the Lore

There are only a few locations which are not permitted for use in the NHRPG. These events include:

  • Installation 04

  • Installation 05

  • The Ark

  • Requiem

These are considered pivotal location in the lore, and as such, are PROHIBITED. They are not to be used in any way without very good reason to do so. Use of these locations for any reason should be discussed and assessed.

8: Slipstream Travel

The limitations behind Slipstream Travel have been retconned. For the sake of story telling and fluidity, the actual speeds of Slipstream Travel have been slightly adjusted from what the lore says. The following is a list of changes that have been made to Slipstream Travel:
