The New! Halo RPG is a fan-created role play based in the Halo universe of lore. As such, the NHRPG is considered fanon, and is not considered canon. Despite this, as a general rule, the NHRPG makes every attempt to maintain some respect for the actual canon of the Halo lore by maintaining key concepts and fundamental ideas, while extrapolating on minor ideas and concepts. Due to various circumstances, the NHRPG can be best described as an "Alternate Universe", with some minor and some major differences in the way that the time-line has progressed. Halo Lore in the New! Halo RPG

How it is Used

The main lore in the Halo universre (called the Canon) is used with some flexibility in the NHRPG. There are a few aspect of the Canon that have been altered, changed, revised, or re-imagined. However, there is nothing that has been flat our rejected. There is a minimum standard to which the NHRPG respect the Canon, to the point where violation beyond this minimum standard is not considered acceptable. Specific examples of how the Canon is used is in subsequent sections of this article. Needless to say, the Canon is the fundamental basis from which all the ideas of the NHRPG stem.

Impacts of the Canon on the NHRPG

With the ongoing releases of both video games and expanded universe novels that have conflicted with the NHRPG, plot devices, concepts, and events are carefully thought out in order to leave a degree of open-endedness to allow future retcon to keep as much respect for the Canon as possible. The following are a few examples of this policy:

NHRPG Part 5 - The Elites and their continuation of hostility towards The UNSC

During Part 5, as a way to diversify the story, the alliance with The Elites came to an abrupt end. The creation of this plot device happened after the official announcement from Bungie that there would be no games taking place beyond the year 2553 (Halo 3). With this in mind, The NHRPG was free to explore these events with a degree of boldness.

NHRPG Part 6 - Humanity and The Brutes

The terms of this agreemement were never an official alliance, but rather, an unofficial cease fire between the leaders of both sides, in the spirit of preventing mutual destruction. Both sides had ulterior motives, such as the Brutes wanting to focus exclusivly on war with The Elites, and Humanities desire to rebuild and reclaim lost ground. The open-ended aspect of this plot device was the fact that there was never an official declaration of peace, but rather, a cease fire and an agreement to suspend active hostilities. Neither side makes it active policy to get too involved with the affairs of the other, with exception to certain key individuals.
NHRPG Parts &, 8, 9, and 10 - The Human/Brute war with The Elites and the invasion of Sanghelios

With the ongoing releases of both video games and expanded universe content, there have been obvious conflicts with the NHRPG and the Canon. As a result of the continuous release of new expanded universe content, it was decided that the NHRPG should change its status to an alternate universe, as it was deemed impossible to stay 100% loyal to the Canon. It was decided that it would be easier, and far more feasble to be an alternate universe because an alternate universe allowed more flexibility, more creative ideas, and most importantly, a fundamentally grounding in the Canon on the most important aspects of the NHRPG, without eliminating creativity. The following are examples of this:

NHRPG Part 5 - The Elites and their continuation of hostility towards The UNSC

During Part 5, as a way to diversify the story, the alliance with The Elites came to an abrupt end. The creation of this plot device happened after the official announcement from Bungie that there would be no games taking place beyond the year 2553 (Halo 3). With this in mind, The NHRPG was free to explore these events with a degree of boldness. However, with the release of expanded universe content and the eventual release of Halo 4, under the supervision of 343 Industries, various plot points in the NHRPG found themslves to be irreconcilable with the Canon. Despite this, the NHRPG has retained its canon, and turned into an alternate universe from this point forward.

The fact of the matter is, it was never stated that The Brutes continued hostilities with Humanity. While it was certainly possible that they did cease hostilities, it remained entirely possible that there was some cease of active hostilities between Humanity and The Brutes. As it was already stated, as a result of official statements (at the time) claiming that there would be nore more Canon after 2553, it was deemed safe to explore the events after Halo 3 with as much creativity and boldness as possible. As of Halo 4, and most recent Canon, there is still no clear indiciation of what the relationship of The Brutes and Humanity involves.

NHRPG Parts 7, 8, 9, and 10 - The Human/Brute war with The Elites and the invasion of Sanghelios

By this point, the story arc involving the cease fire between Humanity and The Brutes had reached a level of popularity that had not been seen in the NHRPG before. As such, it was decided to play out this role to the maximum extent. As of recent Canon, such as Halo 4, and the Reclaimer trilogy, there is mention of Humanity in active hostilities with a faction of Elites, The NHRPG took it a step further, and explored full out hostilities with The Elites. Again, as it was stated, Parts 7 to 10 were created before the official creation of very specific Lore beyond 2553. For the record, it was stateted, off hand and in very brief, that The Brutes were in a state of active war with The Elites, as late as 2559. This basis alone was a good foundation for this 4 part arc.

New! Halo RPG vs Halo Lore

The NHRPG vs the Canon has many differences and similarities. This section will explore all of this, and allow us to explore what sets the NHRPG apart as an alternate Universe

Concepts that were retained from the Halo Canon

  • All Pre-War concepts.

  • The Human-Covenant War and the ongoing genocide.

  • Wartime events on Canon worlds. Events, such as The Fall of Reach, still happened but are not directly covered (aside from a FEW exceptions).

  • The Great Schism.

  • Ships, technology, weapons, equipment, locations, and scientific principles.

  • Alien species and other races, as well as specific differences, details, and idiosyncrasies.

  • The creation of Spartans and the ORION Project (This includes the creation of Spartan Is, Class 1 Spartan IIs, Spartan IIIs, and SPartan IVs).

  • The death of Spartans at the hands of The Covenant.

Concepts that Were Removed from the Halo Canon

  • Specifically named Characters. All named Characters have been replaced with Original Characters.

Concepts that Were Revised from the Halo Canon

  • The invasion of Harvest by The Covenant (Same general principle, slightly different execution of events).

  • The invasion of New Harmony by The Covenant (Changed to the year 2537).

  • The alliance with The Elites in the post Halo 3 era (changed to an alliance with the Brutes after Part 6).

  • The construction of an Infinity-Class Warship (Changed to "The Bismarck" and is controlled by The Trust Syndicate).

  • Availability of Covenant technology to other races (Brutes had definitive and certain access to power armor as early as their adoption into The Covenant).

  • Post Halo-3 events.

Concepts that Were Added that were based from the Halo Canon

  • Class 0 Spartan IIs (To allow the creation of Spartan II characters that will not interefere with the deaths of Class 1 Spartan IIs).

  • The Trust Syndicate (A shadow organization intended to diversify the story by adding human-based antagonists. Intended to compliment The Insurrection).

  • The technical superiority of ONI Section 0 in contrast to the rest of the UNSC (intended to facilitate easier movement around the Galaxy and allow for story element to progress at a more rapid pace).

  • The Obsidian Hierarchy (The Brute antithesis to ONI Section 0. Technically adept special operations group created to give more depth to the inner workings of The Brutes and their military).

  • Various planets for all factions (Done to facilitate plot arcs that would not directly impact Canon worlds during the Human-Covenant war. Allows for more freedom to explore plot arcs in backstories).

NHRPG Specifics

Rules

  1. This RPG will take place in the Halo universe.

  2. You can be an Elite, Brute, Grunt, Jackal, Hunter, ODST, Marine, Naval Officer, or SPARTAN. Do not make convoluted characters with weird enhancements. SPARTANs are fine, you can customize your power armor with special skills (like cloaking). People with weird, contrived, enhancements to their body, or weird social standards will be deleted from the RPG. In short...no cyborgs, gods, religious idols, or nut job

  3. Your arsenal of weapons can only be weapons from the Halo franchise, you can even use the confirmed weapons from Halo Reach. You can also customize your weapons too an extent. SEE THE WEAPONS SECTION

  4. You can't arbitrarily kill other players, I know, it sucks. you can't control them either, but something like "they nodded" is fine, just nothing too drastic. If someone gives you permission to kill, that's cool.

  5. You can control a group of characters, but do not create 1000's of characters and do nothing with them. Make them as you need them.

  6. Do not be Overpowered. There is a difference between Skilled and Overpowered. A soldier with the rank of Private would not have the skill set necessary to fight off a group of enemy soldiers. However, an experienced veteran would.

The New! Halo RPG (NHRPG)

As with the concept of "alternate universes", some concepts remain the same, while other concepts are fundamentally different. This is explored in more detail further into this article.

  7. Be balanced, If you have a curable disease, you get injected with cure for said disease, YOU HAVE BEEN CURED.

  8. Try and participate in the story.

  9. Characters must act as any character should.

    1. Brutes are a combatant race

    2. Elites are a methodical race

    3. Humans are a cunning race

    4. Spartans should ACT like Spartans.

  10. No Sex! Affection is fine...but all out sex is not permitted. Exception is granted to plot building devices.

  11. No 21st century weapons and No 21st century references. General concepts such as company names is fine but specific product placement is NOT ALLOWED.

    1. No television shows

    2. No products (iPods, Xboxs, PS3s, video games, etc.)

    3. Company names are fine ON THE RARE OCCASION, as it has been established that various companies that exist today are still around in the future.

  12. Do not stall the story. Your character will be RPed as necessary to avoid the RPG from being put on hold.

  13. Characters must stick to their affiliation, with rare exceptions being granted for plot devices. However, generally speaking, Bob the Elite is loyal to his fellow Elites, and Jim the Brute is loyal to his fellow Brutes.
