Jacob was on the roof of the Bentz Hotel, coordinating with the fire teams around White River that were getting hit harder and harder with rumors of brutes. Jacob was in the middle of a conversation with a Lieutenant on the other side of the city.
Jacob: LT! What's your status, over!?
LT: Getting hit hard from all sides, Cap'n! Trying to retreat back to main HQ! Sound copy?
Jacob: Good copy! Continue tactical retreat. Signs of brutes?
LT: Every direction!
Jacob: Copy! Sharpmen out!
Jacob cut the comm line and pressed his hand to his helmet to contact Harrison. He looked up in the sky for a brief moment to get some clarity.
However, Jacob was struck hard when he saw the Covenant Corvette over White River. The Corvette was systematically wiping out the evacuation shuttles, either destroying them in one full hit, or damaging them enough for them to come crashing back down to the planet.
Jacob was unable to move, the people on the ships were helpless, family members, friends, all lost in a burning inferno that seemed like there would be no end. He could see that other marines were staring at the evacuation shuttles burning up. And all Jacob could do was watch. He couldn't help anyone...in any way.
And Jacob hated every second of it.
He watched as each evacuation shuttle he fought so hard to save was destroyed in a single, fiery blast. Some others being destroyed on their crash back to San Angeles. Jacob shook his head...even if he managed to gather some troops for rescue operations, the civilians would have been killed by Covenant before they could get there.
The civilian population of White River was lost. Eventually, after a few minutes, Jacob shook his head. He immediately contacted Admiral Harrison.
Jacob: Admiral! This is Captain Sharpmen! There is a Covenant corvette over White River, evacuation shuttles are down! I repeat, Covenant corvette over White River, evacuation shuttles down! Sound copy!?
Ten Minutes Earlier:
Harrison was mobilizing the fleet in an attack pattern, hoping to strike the Covenant Armada quickly and with ease. If this plan didn't work to his advantage, San Angeles' defense fleet would be lost, and he would be unable to hold against such a formidable opponent in space.
From his head count, Harrison had seventy-eight ships. The Covenant fleet had a mere thirty-seven. However, what the Covenant lost in numbers, they gained in firepower. The UNSC Navy would hardly last five hours in a frontal engagement. Harrison was hoping to provoke the Covenant armada by deploying the Shiva-nuclear war heads and creating a massive EMP field. When the Covenant approached, their targeting systems would be offline for a short time, giving the Navy an advantage for only a minute or two.
Harrison hoped that the plan would work. He sat in his command chair, his ship at the front of all others. He was about to speak to the entire fleet when he took a deep breath.
Harrison: Ladies and Gentlemen...it has been an honor defending this planet with you all. In the coming moments, we may die, we may survive, but what I do know we WILL do...is punch a hole so far into this Covenant armada that they will cower back to their precious home worlds.
Harrison paused.
Harrison: San Angeles will not fall without humanity doing what we do! Defending it to the last man!
Harrison paused again and stood. He looked at the view screen showing the Covenant armada.
Harrison: Set an intercept course for the Covenant armada...in a moment I will activate the nukes and create an EMP field, and hopefully destroy cloaked phantoms in the process. Once you are in operational weapon range, fire your MACs and archer missiles. We will lead this Covenant straight into hell.
Harrison turned to his helmsman and nodded, and within a moment the Vigorous Inferno was on it's way towards the Covenant armada, with the fleet following it. Harrison stepped over to the weapons station and looked at the officer.
Harrison: Do it...
The officer nodded as Harrison turned back around. The nuclear weapons exploded in space, sending a perimeter of fireballs around the Covenant armada. And within a few moments, the Covenant took the "advantage" and approached the UNSC.
Harrison grinned. He walked over to the holotable.
Harrison: Lock on the main Covenant battle cruiser as soon as we are in range! Archer missile pods fifty through one hundred and the MAC, fire on my---
Harrison was interrupted by a familiar voice.
Jacob: Admiral! This is Captain Sharpmen! There is a Covenant corvette over White River, evacuation shuttles are down! I repeat, Covenant corvette over White River, evacuation shuttles down! Sound copy!?
Harrison shook his head, he couldn't believe what he just heard. He replied to Jacob.
Harrison: Say again Captain?
Jacob: Covenant Corvette in White River! Evac shuttles down! They are preparing to fire on the city!
Harrison shook his head.
Harrison: Copy Captain!
Harrison turned to his communications officer.
Harrison: Redirect any two ships to White River! I want that Corvette destroyed!
