Omega Legion as well as dozens of other squads had since arrived at the Bentz Hotel. Lt. Mendez was doing his best to keep the perimeter tight, reinforcing key areas with ODSTs, marines, and weapons. They had hundreds of men in the two-mile wide perimeter, but they knew thousands of Covenant infantry were coming their way. They would need to entrench and hold out as long as possible.
Omega Legion had been spread out in between Bentz Hotel. Limos and Troy were thrown on the bottom floor, while Colby and Carmicle were put on the fourth floor for extra long-ranged fire. At the top of the hotel was Lt. Mendez and his command center. From the view Jacob had out of the back of the pelican, he was looking pretty stressed.
Jacob yelled back to MacLaren.
Jacob: CPO! Drop me on the roof of the Bentz...then get the hell outta here and prepare for a medical evac...hot LZ!
MacLaren: Yessir! Good luck, sir!
Jacob: You too!
By this time, the pelican was hovering over the roof and lowered down, just a few feet off the ground. Jacob immediately jumped out and ran over to Lt. Mendez and the pelican lifted upwards and flew away. Mendez watched the whole thing.
Lt. Mendez: I asked for fifty men...not one, Captain?
Jacob laughed.
Jacob: Trust me...I'll be enough for now. What's the situation, LT?
Mendez nodded and led Jacob to a computer terminal, it showed a layout of the two-mile perimeter and suspected Covenant movement.
Mendez: Info from the fleet says a massive Covenant army is on their way over here for one final push...thousand troops, and a few dozen heavy vehicles. ETA...four minutes. As for us...
Mendez shrugged, and pointed on the map the specific areas he reinforced.
Mendez: We have six hundred troopers...marines, ODSTs, etc. Heavy weapons in six areas, warthogs transporting civilians here...and here. We also have four AA guns set up deeper into the city.
Mendez paused.
Mendez: We already set up a front line outside of the buildings...100 meters away...with a hundred troops...volunteers, they are to give us a sitrep of the Covenant status. Snipers are set up on every building to cover them on their way back.
Mendez paused again...he pointed to two areas to the left and right of the Bentz.
Mendez: Covenant is going to try to push through here...if we can funnel them into one, it'll be a shooting range for our boys. And give the civies enough time to punch out of White River. Two other Captains are on site and are guarding the left and right flanks.
Jacob nodded, he took a look around the area, noticing the two buildings on the left and right. Below each of them was a perfect entry-way for Covenant vehicles and infantry. Jacob knew the Covenant would bombard them with wraiths and banshees if they found out how many soldiers they had hidden in the buildings. They would need to surprise them.
Jacob: Alright LT...I want to trick the Covenant here. Those 100 troopers out there are going to retreat as soon as they have a good idea of what's out there. I want us to act as if those are the only troopers we have, limited sniper fire, conceal the shots.
Jacob paused.
Jacob; You said the Covenant are going to push for these two areas?
Jacob nodded, he smirked.
Jacob: Pull our men from the buildings and stockpile the supports with as much explosives as you can to destroy only the building.
Jacob paused, he looked around.
Jacob: Snipers on this building and the two over there...I want a hundred troopers behind the Bentz and lined up in front of the "rat-holes," as I am calling them. Everyone else stays hidden until I give the signal.
Jacob smiled.
Jacob: Once I think we can do it...I'm going to blow the buildings, link the charges to my PDA... bury the Covenant, and split their army in half. We'll have snipers fire on both sides, 400 troopers firing on the main army and the other 200 firing on the ones inside the city.
Jacob nodded.
Jacob: That should bury vehicles, give our heavy weapons teams enough time to line up shots, and confuse the Covenant so quickly that we can take them out...giving our guys enough time to evac.
Jacob nodded. He was happy with the plan and turned to Mendez.
Jacob: Relay the orders...we have two minutes by my logic. And do not fire until I blow the rat-holes.
Mendez simply nodded and talked to his fellow officers and got them to relay the orders to the men. Within seconds the two buildings to the left and right of the Bentz were being evacuated and armed with explosives, linked to a single PDA on Jacob's side. The men evacuating the building were to be sent to the buildings behind it and lining up for an assault on the Covenant once the rat-holes were sunk.
Jacob began walking to the side of the wall, where he would repel down. That's when Mendez called his name.
Mendez: Captain Sharpmen, where are you going?
Jacob turned and chuckled.
Jacob: To join the other 100 men on the front! You got another volunteer, LT!
With that, Jacob repelled down the side of the building with little stress, as soldiers watched him repel down and run towards the front line. He was going into the fire.
Above San Angeles:
Harrison was listening in on radio chatter, he could hear the orders being relayed by Jacob and approved of them. The evacuation of White River was almost complete...this distraction so to speak would give the thousands of civilians still in the city enough time to leave. And with the Covenant armada still trapped behind a nuclear field...they had time.
Harrison nodded, he smiled.
Harrison: And that's why Captain Sharpmen was put in charge...
