Apple iPad - Hardware Review
Review by Naked Crook

Alright, I am by no means an Apple lover, but I do not hate Apple. I don't make love to an Apple product when I go to bed at night (but I do know some people who do, and it creeps me out). I do not sit up at night plotting against the company, but I do not lay awake at night think about Apple. I have used Apple machines before and I will say this for all of the Apple products I have used; the design is very minimalistic. So, what constitutes the Apple iPad? Well, there is the design, the interface, and the functionality.

As with most Apple devices, the iPad looks boring. Sure, it sports the trademark aluminum chassis, and it sports that fruity little apple, but beyond that, it is just another white, gray, or black device (gray in this case), in terms of looks. The iPad uses an aluminum chassis, which conducts heat very nicely, a fantastic way to make the end user very uncomfortable. I don't like burning myself on my hardware when I play with it...in this case...I don't like burning myself on the iPad. To be fair, the iPad only got hot when I was "multitasking". Like most people, I enjoy listening to music while I surf the net.

Lets talk about the multitasking on the iPad. It isn't really multitasking. As I just said, it is listening to music while I do something on the iPad. I was not impressed by this for multiple reasons. First being, that doing more then one task really heats the device up! It can get pretty hot! Second reason, the iPad tends to slow down a bit, yes, the iPad lags from time to time, but only when you are really pushing the stress buttons. Third, there is really only 3 or 4 permutations of different multitasking combinations you can do; music and internet, music and reading e-books, music and e-mail, and music and games...but the music stops when you start a game so this one is up in the air. As a matter of reference, when you are "multitasking", battery life takes a serious hit.

So what can one do on the iPad? Well, you can read e-books, read the New York Times (which every iPad demo has done FYI), play a few games, watch a movie, listen to music, and write sticky notes. As a matter of point, I have an iPhone, and I love my iPhone. That iPhone is my life, I always have my iPhone, along with my little blood sucking data plan, and my extra external battery for more juice. That iPhone keeps me connected with my website, it keeps me connected to my loved ones, my e-mail, and my life! When I am in public, I am always looking at my phone, tapping away on it! I am even looking at that damn phone when I am driving (knock on wood). When I look at the iPad...all I see is a large, out of place, iTouch with less features to build on. I cannot use it with one hand (comfortably), there is no Camera, no notifications, or no new or extra touch controls! I like my compact iPhone...I don't an ugly bulky device that only offers me free New York Times hype...I don't even like New York!

Alright, so the iPad brings nothing new to the table, but it is still called revolutionary! So what does it have? Well, I played with the iPad for two days non stop (My friend wants it back tomorrow) and the bag of tricks was not impressive (though I must admit...TNO does look nice on the screen...so points for the iPad). If you take a stock iPhone, and put it next to the iPad, the iPhone has more default apps. Sad...isn't it? The iPad is capable of HD movie playback which is nice, but movie playback is not a strong point of the iPad. With no Flash support, the iPad is pretty useless to me.

I am a big fan of the touch interface. In fact, I am an elitist jerk when I see other people with their button interface phones. A slide phone? That is so 2006! A flip phone? Disgusting! I'm offended by that garbage. However...the iPad has no new touch interfaces. Nothing, nada! Same old, same old! Bad Apple...very bad Apple! Typing isn't bad, if you set the device flat down and practice. The buttons are a bit bigger on the iPad then they are on the iPhone, but that is not too impressive...I would expect it to be that way!

So why would anyone buy this device? I don't know. I have an Acer Netbook with a 10 hour battery and I will tell you this; my Acer Netbook takes the iPad, and whoops its CPU from here to Kingdom come! The iPad is so awful that Saint Peter himself tightened his sandal and kicked it back to hell! The iPad is terrible! I will never buy this device, and I am glad to be getting rid of it!

One final thing...this review...was written...on an iPad. It took three times longer then it should have.
