Harrison watched Tye leave the area, leaving Jacob and Harrison to discuss other matters. Harrison turned to face Jacob, his arms behind his back, he smiled.
Harrison: You did well today. I'm glad to see your kicking.
Jacob chuckled.
Jacob: Gonna take a lot more than a Covenant invasion force to put me in the ground, sir.
Harrison nodded, he walked over to the terminal and leaned on it. Jacob leaned on it as well, almost sitting, he crossed his arms. Harrison took a deep breath.
Harrison: I won't lie to you, Captain. Things are going to get rough...very quickly, very ruthless.
Jacob simply nodded, he knew Harrison had a lot on his plate right now.
Harrison: I first need to talk to you about the mission...What did you recover?]
Jacob stood upwards.
Jacob: Exactly what you wanted. Information on every person ever involved in the Spartan program. But, sir, there is something you must know.
Harrison looked up.
Jacob: I had to give Nighthawk the datachip in order to do what was required of me. He made two copies, one for himself, and the original for you.
Harrison raised an eyebrow.
Harrison: And the second copy?
Jacob chuckled.
Jacob: I am supposed to give that back to Kolya when I see him, sir.
Harrison: For what purpose?
Jacob shrugged.
Jacob: All I was told was that being on the Trust's radar is a very bad thing. Nighthawk suggested if I give Kolya what he wanted, there is no harm in it, considering you now have the data as well.
Harrison nodded.
Jacob: I still don't know why I would ever be on their radar in the first place, but what's done is done, sir.
Harrison nodded again.
Harrison: I know you well enough to trust your judgement, Captain. I will go along with this plan. Is there anything else I should know?
Jacob nodded.
Jacob: There's an AI on that chip. Eternal Darkness, or Ed, as he likes to go by. He helped me capture all the data and get out alive. He's useful and well, he's a Smart ONI AI.
Harrison smiled, even better.
Harrison: Good. This is very good news. ONI loves their toys.
Jacob chuckled and leaned back on the terminal. Harrison stood upwards.
Harrison: Commander Vernette said you know more about the situation on the ground?
Jacob shrugged.
Jacob: I wouldn't say know more about, rather, saw what was going on. The western and eastern fronts are locked down and secured, and the southern line was almost untouched. The northern line is where a lot of things fell to shit, sir.
Jacob leaned off the terminal and then activated it, revealing a hologram of the spaceport.
Jacob: Heavy casualties all around, northern line was hit the most. I sent out an order before recalling all battle-hardened marines back here to rearm and resupply. Most of the reinforcements are headed there. Any wounded marines, especially the ones from the Medical HQ they had set up, are now being evacuated. Otherwise, the area is locked down, and due to Nighthawk's little stunt with his ship, most of Carver is destroyed.
Harrison nodded.
Harrison: You're saying we have all the civilians we could possibly get?
Jacob's head fell, he nodded.
Jacob: Yes, sir. Anyone who was out there is surely dead, search parties have gone out to look for any survivors, but it doesn't look promising.
Harrison stood upwards, he was unsure of how he felt about that.
Jacob: The airfield west of here fell hours ago, before the invasion began. The only survivor was Captain Frost. Minor cities have already been evaced here and any spaceport closeby. We did the best we could with the limited air support.
Harrison nodded, he expected as much. He crossed his arms, and rubbed his chin.
Harrison: Covenant activity?
Jacob: Very minimal since their defeat here. Any Covenant inside the city was surely killed by the blast, and all other forces have retreated from the city to various safe points. Area's we can't hit...they're swarming with anti-air.
Harrison took a deep breath, he sighed.
Harrison: Alright...that's enough, Captain. I think I finally understand the situation down here.
Jacob nodded, he stood straight.
Harrison: Now, we have the issue of the Trust and the Covenant to deal with.
Harrison paused, Jacob chose not to say anything as he saw he was thinking.
Harrison: I should update you on the fleet status, I hope you will spread the word to the Seniors.
Jacob nodded.
Harrison: We won, but definitely at a cost. A good portion of the fleet was destroyed or damaged in the attack, and we managed to take out a lot of the Covenant, but not enough to bring us anywhere closer to defeating them conventionally. We control most of the planet, the Covenant are lying back, licking their wounds most likely.
Harrison began to work on the holotable, getting a view of the planet.
Harrison: The infiltration teams worked and we managed to destroy two of the Super-cruisers, the third and flagship managed to escape. But, we won, and we now hold the cards to turn this battle around.
Harrison brought up a view of the UNSC Fleet.
Harrison: Our best bet is to begin launching ground operations, take out the Covenant strongholds and push the bastards off the planet. Once that happens, I am hoping we will be ready for the third and final round of fighting up above.
Jacob nodded, he leaned on the terminal.
Jacob: And the Trust, sir?
Harrison shook his head.
Harrison: I believe we'll find them as Nighthawk and Anaconda move around more. Remember that ODST Black Team?
Jacob nodded.
Harrison: They were with Vice-Admiral Yates, and managed to kill one of my ODST teams and sabotage infiltration attempts. Vice-Admiral Yates and Black Team are now enemies of the UNSC.
Jacob stood.
Jacob: And that Spartan team?
Harrison raised an eyebrow, he snapped his fingers.
Harrison: The Spartan team...My God, this data is going to be even more useful to us. Once I return to the ship I will cross-reference what we have on that Spartan team with this information, see what I can find.
Jacob nodded, finally putting some the data to use made him a little happier.
Harrison: In the meantime, we stay here, continue the evacuation and then begin our moves on the Covenant.
Jacob nodded, he picked up his helmet from the terminal and then saluted Harrison.
Jacob: Yes, sir!
Harrison returned the salute, formally.
Jacob put his helmet on his head and then looked at Harrison.
Harrison: Jacob...as a friend, get yourself looked at.
Harrison paused.
Harrison: Ya look like shit.
Harrison shook Jacob's hand, who was smiling under his helmet.
Jacob: Sir.
Jacob and Harrison both nodded as Harrison left the room with Strike Team Diamond, he went in search of Frost for an update on casualties. Jacob turned around and walked over to the weapons rack a few meters away. He tossed the assault rifle he had been carrying to the side, along with the magnum he picked up. Jacob cracked his back and could feel his cracked ribs and the bruises all over his body. He groaned a bit, but kept going.
Jacob: Like hell I'm going to a medic..they'd stop me from doing anything.
Jacob reached for a sniper rifle on the rack and refreshed all his magazine pouches. He slid the strap around his shoulder and let the sniper hang loose.
Jacob: Not now, not this early into the fight. I won't be resting until I see the bastards go boom.
Jacob picked up a Socom off the rack and slid the stock back, he heard the gun clicked and nodded in delight. He slid the socom into his holster and grabbed extra grenades and ammo.
Jacob: Too early to quit, too late to stop.
Jacob smiled and turned around, he could feel his wounds stretch open around his chest and decided to do a last-minute pick-me-up. He grabbed a biofoam injector and was no one was looking slid it under his chest plate and squeezed. The biofoam entered his system almost immediately and began to fill up the scratches, gashes, and large wounds across his body.
Jacob took a deep breath and then kept walking, tossing the can to the side.
Meanwhile, just out of atmosphere:
Furium was just outside of the Perilous Avenger's docking bay when he requested clearance. Seconds later, he was docked inside the hangar and was immediately greeted by two of Dangerus' bodyguards.
Bodyguard: We had been told you were coming.
The brutes sniffed the air and looked around.
Bodyguard: Where are the survivors?
Furium grunted.
Furium: I am the survivor.
The two brutes looked at each other as Furium pushed his way through them, heading to the bridge to inform Dangerus of the situation, the bodyguards followed behind. As Furium reached the bridge, he heard shouting from the brig. Furium turned and looked at the bodyguards.
Bodyguard: He is in the middle of an interrogation.
Furium grunted and entered the brig to see Dangerus with his arms crossed, in front of an ODST chained to the wall.
Dangerus: I will not ask again.
The ODST mumbled some words and Dangerus grunted, as he slammed his foot on the ODST's leg. The ODST yelled out in pain. Furium wasted no time in approaching Dangerus.
Furium: Chieftain! A word.
Dangerus turned to see Furium, his facial expression unchanged. The two began to speak in their native tongue.
Dangerus: Furium, what news of the city?
Furium shook his head, he stood a few feet away from Dangerus as he saluted him.
Furium: We did not succeed in bringing the city down. The filth maintain control.
Dangerus nodded.
Dangerus: Yes, yes, I know of this! Are the forces back?
Furium did not respond, he simply fell to one knee.
Furium: My Chieftain, I am the only survivor. I have...failed you.
Furium looked upwards as Dangerus increased his breathing. Any brute on the deck could hear Dangerus' heavy breathing turn into fury. He snarled loudly, he was enraged by the news of the loss of his brutes. HIS brutes, brutes who entrusted their lives to him were forever gone, taken by the filth.
Dangerus growled as he turned to the ODST on the wall and picked him up by the throat, ripping him from the wall, you could hear his bones snap as the chains gave way. The ODST yelled out in pain as Dangerus lifted him into the air and squeezed slowly. The ODST coudn't do anything, he was helpless, and eventually, you could hear the crack.
Dangerus had broken the ODST's neck only a few seconds after pulling him off the wall, killing him. He tossed the ODST down the brig and turned to Furium.
Dangerus: Up. You, as well as I, will get our revenge when we glass this planet.
Dangerus began to walk away as Furium stood and followed.
Dangerus: I did not save your life and give you this chance to fail me. You will lead the ground teams, prove your loyalty to me, and avenge the fallen. What happened?
Furium followed Dangerus as they went to the bridge.
Furium: A human ship dropped out of orbit and engaged the forces directly on the ground. They had already begun firing by the time I realized what was happening.
Dangerus grunted.
Dangerus: An unforeseen circumstance. We have lost control of the planet, but we can still continue fighting. Make no mistake, Furium, we will defeat the filth.
Furium nodded as the two entered the bridge. Dangerus yelled to one of his brutes.
Dangerus: Contact Xyrho! Ask him to join us in my command room.
The brute nodded and sent the message as Dangerus turned to his command room.
Dangerus: It is time you understand why I must destroy this planet. It is for a greater good than the will of our "Prophets."
Meanwhile, back at the spaceport:
Carmicle and Troy had watched their team leave, critically wounded, they were sure they weren't going to join them for some time. Yet, they would keep fighting. They had already begun rearming themselves when the Cross siblings approached them.
Jaclyn: We just wanted to thank you for pulling our asses out of the fire back there.
Paul: We don't normally do that type of fighting, we're usually on special ops.
Carmicle and Troy both nodded.
Carmicle: Don't mention it.
Paul and Jaclyn smiled. Troy looked at Jaclyn and smiled, she was beautiful.
Jaclyn: Sergeant Athios wishes you luck, and if you need a team to latch onto for the rest of the fight. The Suicide Squad is offering two slots.
Troy nodded.
Troy: We're in!
Carmicle glared at Troy.
Carmicle: Corporal!
Troy looked at Carmicle.
Troy: I'm sorry, Sarge. But c'mon, you think we're gonna do any better on our own?
Carmicle sighed and stood up, Troy did as well. Carmicle smiled and nodded.
Carmicle: We're in.
Paul and Jaclyn nodded.
Paul: Just follow us.
Carmicle and Troy both followed the Cross siblings as they made their way to join the Suicide Squad. Athios and Folee were both there to greet them.
Athios: Sergeant Carmicle, Corporal Miles. I'm glad you decided to join us.
Carmicle nodded.
Carmicle: I think it's best for both of us.
Athios agreed.
Athios: You've already met the Cross siblings, I'm Sergeant Athios, this guy is Gunnery Sergeant William Folee.
Troy nodded.
Troy: Yeah, we know him.
Athios nodded.
Athios: Good we skip formalities and stop acting like jarheads. Grab some grub, eat up, word is we're moving soon.
Troy and Carmicle both nodded and accepted the food. They began to eat and talk with Suicide Squad.
Carmicle: We both want to express our sorrow for Corporal McKinley, damn fine soldier.
Athios laughed, as did the rest of the group, this took Carmicle and Troy a bit back.
Paul: He was a little fucker.
Jaclyn: Assault, sexual harassment, manslaughter.
Folee: Kid was given a choice between death row, or the chance to kill some other fuckers with us. He chose the better option of the two, even if he still didn't make it. He took out hundreds of Covenant while doing it.
Athios noticed Carmicle and Troy were a bit shocked and decided to fill them in.
Athios: Listen, the Suicide Squad ain't like other ODST squads or whatever. We all understand that going into this, a lot of us won't come back out alive. We all understand the price we are willing to pay. We're willing to die to give Earth and the other colonies a little extra time of life.
Athios shrugged.
Athios: We don't mean to be cruel or heartless, but we know three things in this club.
Before Athios could say them, the others interjected.
Paul: Don't fuck up.
Jaclyn: Learn how to use every weapon.
Folee shrugged.
Folee: More of our saying, Honor Under the Sword. Die in battle, or don't fucking die at all.
Athios smiled.
Athios: We have the name of the Suicide Squad for a reason, so don't be shocked.
Troy and Carmicle both looked at each other. They turned and raised their glasses.
Carmicle: To McKinley...
Troy: To dying like a true fucking hero...
The four others all chuckled and raised their glasses to the toast.
Paul: I think they're starting to get it, boss.
Athios smiled.
Athios: Yeah, I think so too.
