Nighthawk: Perhaps...perhaps not. We will see.
Nighthawk turned his chair again and looked at Jacob.
NighthawL Jacob...I am sure you have a basic understanding of how the UNSC manages to keep field operators up-to-date on most recent data and telemetry. In a nutshell, it has to do with remote up-links, from field equipment, such as Pelicans, modular systems, and even VISR data for ODSTs. This uplink is generally very well protected by a very complex system of ciphers that prevent unauthorized users from receiving updates. In other words, every piece of equipment that UNSC personnel use in the field has its own unique cipher which is used to gain access to the overarching battle-net. With the right ciphers, you can start getting updates from the battle-net...updates which include orders, ship movements...you name it.
Nighthawk paused.
Nighthawk: The Covenant do the same thing, for the most part. The idea is the same. With the right ciphers...you could surreptitiously gain access to the Covenant battle-net...and spy on them.
Nighthawk shrugged.
Nighthawk: I honestly believe that I could reverse engineer a cipher from that Phantom which would allow us to ghost onto the Covenant battle-net...and spy on them. We would know what they were planning AND doing the moment they would start doing it.
Tyber: Why are we not ALREADY doing this?
Nighthawk: Well...I have not been able to do it yet...because I do not have a cipher that I could reverse engineer...yet...
Nighthawk paused. He used his thumb to point over his shoulder, at the Phantom that was visible through the cockpit window.
Nighthawk: There is one like...RIGHT THERE...inside the computers of that Phantom...sitting...waiting...and fully working. I could easily have that analyzed and reverse engineered. EASILY!
