Nothing is more deadly than the Syn. They have consumed worlds after coming through a Jump Gate from a wormhole that the United Star Corps created. They infested and consumed the fleet protecting the Jump Gate Harbor infesting it till they took control of the fleet. They when infecting a vessel take control of the power generators and feed on them to power their infestation and move to the weapon systems and navigation infesting them till its under their control. Once this is complete they will start to show growths on the ships until they are unrecognizable. These ships however are sentient now and the Syn that infected the ship is no longer in the Hive mind its own intelligence is now encouraged. However it cannot gain intelligence from the people it consumes while infesting the ship.
