We discussed earlier about a man, a war hero who came to town in 1974. His name? Henry Dusk, twenty-seven years old. Henry was born in 1952, and joined the US military in 1970, later that year he was sent to Vietnam as a marine. But, before we get there, let's take a look at Henry's early life.
Henry was born in a small town in Wisconsin, he had two older brothers and his father was a US Marine. Henry grew up, always fighting with his parents and brothers. He was bullied as a kid, always being called the nerd of his school. Henry's father was a drunk, who constantly beat him, and his mother, was a deadbeat. Sooner or later, the bullied becomes the fighter. At fifteen, Henry beat one other kid unconscious, before the teachers stopped him. He was expelled from school and two months later, at the age of sixteen, packed up and ran off. Henry stole $563 from his parents and two brothers, he went on the road.
Five months later, after hitchhiking, camping, and walking he arrived in Chicago. He saw it as being "the big city." He got a job as a paperboy, and started living with the owner of a small deli. He was happy with what he had, with everything he had. Afterward, the deli owner signed him up for high school classes and Henry was back in highschool, and this time, he wasn't bullied.
Henry graduated at eighteen, and shortly after said his farewells, and joined the marines. After his training Henry was a lean mean, 245 pound, fighting machine. He had a scruffy beard and dark brown hair, average height and strong build. This is when Henry's story starts to get interesting.
Private First Class Henry Dusk, US Marine, the one who saved fourteen lives during 1970. When the Americans began to pull away from border areas, reducing casualties. However, Henry's squad was farther into the border and they were being pulled out...via helicopter. Henry's copter, along with two others, were shot down, twenty-nine miles from South Korea. Henry was the first to awake, he secured the dead's dogtags, and gave the wounded immediate medical attention, these actions saved three marines lives. Eventually, forty minutes later, three others in his copter woke up, two were wounded, and three were dead. Henry explained the situation, and he, with two others ventured on to secure the other two copters. Another nine people were found, five of which were wounded.
Henry and the others fought off waves of Vietnamese soldiers, and it was getting late. As the others drifted off too sleep, Henry secured food, water, and more medicine for the others. He was the one who helped them survive the next two days. On the third day, the marines started to move, very slowly. Only nine people could walk, and five needed to be carried. Henry scouted ahead, finding a Vietnamese military base, there was no way around, and with limited numbers, the marines couldn't find. Henry devised a plan, the others would begin to walk around, while Henry made a diversion. Henry handed over his dogtags and personal belongings to a friend. He told him where to go, the marine promised his life he would do it. This is where Henry gets his hero status.
While the marines began to move around the complex, Henry was setting the last of his explosives on a bridge, northeast of the complex. Henry blew the bridge, attracting all sorts of attention to him. Henry ran, he ran for his life, occasionally shooting behind him. Three hours later, he was shot in the knee and captured. Henry Dusk was MIA, presumed KIA by all his fellow marines.
Henry Dusk became a Hero.
