The Kig-Yar - AKA: Skirmishers

In combat, Skirmishers typically serve as snipers and rapid assault scouts within the Covenant due to their excellent senses of sight, smell, hearing, and agility. Skirmishers are around the same level as the Grunts in the Covenant hierarchy, although the Skirmishers despise the Grunts and believe themselves to be superior. Skirmishers are fast and deadly, and a single Skirmishers can prove to be problematic for the more green soldiers.

Early History

Refer to information on the Jackals.

Human-Covenant War

Skirmishers serve as rapid light infantry in the Covenant War machine. They were excellent snipers, and also used as front-line light infantry, armed with plasma pistols. They were used as rapid assault infantry, constantly moving, making it difficult for soldiers to get solid aim on them. They have greater agility than Jackals, and as such, are more important than Jackals in terms of military usefulness. Due to the rather limited scope of their authority, they were never seen in leadership roles when Elites were present.

Post Covenant Status

Skirmishers are assumed to have been wiped out during Reach. It is possible their numbers are limited, and the rest of their race is confined to their homeworld.

Biology / Geneology

Skirmishers are very bird like, so it is assumed they are cold-blooded. This implies that they lay eggs, as opposed to live birth.

Physical Appearence

Skirmishers have features similar to birds of prey as well as reptiles. Their legs are sinewy and muscular, and are reverse-jointed in a similar fashion to birds. They have sharp claws on both hands and feet. Being carnivores, their sharp beaks are lined with rows of razor-sharp teeth; some have far more numerous teeth which bear a passing resemblance to baleen.

Personality / Behaviour

Skirmishers have a very strong militant personality. It has been observed, that Skirmishers are excelent tacticians, and excellent infantry units. They have an excellent sense of mobilization and movement, making them excellent team players. Their strong militant nature makes them natural allies for the Elites. It is surmised their relationship with the Covenant was one based soley on military. Is is also surmised their current relationship with the Elites is one also based soley on military.

Director Vernette's Personal Notes

From what I have observed, Skirmishers are worse than Jackals. I have rarely seen them, but I have seen them enough to know they are more viccious, aggressive, and militant. They are not to be underestimated. If they are seen, they are to be taken out immediatly, as history tells me that they serve only to distract UNSC soldiers so the Elites could pick us off, one by one.

After Reach, I never saw any more Skirmishers, but observation of Eayn has shown that they still do exist. Delta told me on several occasions that he kept Skirmishers on his ship, during the Human-Covenant war that is. He also said that he killed one and ate it and that they actually taste pretty good...once you defeather them that is. He said they are best when the skin is slightly burnt because it gives them a crunchy taste. Why is this relevant information? I don't know. I thought it would be interesting to add. If you are hungry...grab a Skirmisher combo.
