These weapon systems are found on all Cruiser, Heavy Cruisers as well as some destroyers. These fire super heated plasma that literally melts armor plating at over 3,000 degrees celsius. But it also requires that the ship's shields are down. The plasma can burn a hole into the shields eventually, which is why ships with this weapon system usually has Heavy bombers on hand.
