*please tell me what you think Criticism would be helpful and no going easy k*
The movie I am doing this scene analysis is JAWS by Steven Spielberg. It takes place in a small resort town in New England called Amity, and the town has had recent shark attacks. Our main protagonist is Brody the Amity’s’ sheriff, assisted by Matt Hooper a shark expert, they realize that only one shark is attacking everyone. Vaughn the Amity mayor doesn’t believe Hooper and Brody, as Vaughn believes the shark that they caught the other day is the one that had killed the two victims who have died by a shark attack, so he opens the beaches for the 4th of July festivities. Taking matters into their own hands Hooper and Brody hire Quint a shark hunter to help them find the shark and stop it from ever bothering the town again. The three heroes go into the ocean in a ship called the Orca. Soon after they find the shark and kill it.
In the scene that I am dong it is already the 4th of July and tourists are starting to come into the small town. Everyone believes the shark has been caught and killed. Even so Brody and Hooper hired people to patrol the beaches from the shark menace that they believe is still out there. The tourists are at the beach having a good time, even the mayor is out in the beach seeing all the tourists. Pretty soon mass hysteria goes in the water as two people spot a shark fin swimming by them. As everything calms down in the water the patrol people go after the fin and it is soon realized that the shark fin was a prank from two kids in diving suits. Now I will be showing how all my analyzing skills into showing how the shapes, colors, and music emphasize all the things that have happened in this scene.
When the scene starts we see a boat of tourists coming towards the town the first thing that you notice is a Big Yellow triangle symbolizing that there is hazard ahead of them. The ship is also white which makes it feel that the tourists are innocent and unknowing of their fate. As it cuts to the next shot the we hear happy music and children talking happily, but it seems that the director is trying to tell the audience that there still looms a threat of the shark by showing us an old picture of a shark (words saying “Beach Closed”). After staying in the picture for a while it starts to pan to the left passing by a row of seemingly menacing shark teeth. When it is done panning it stops in front of the same white boat yet again showing us the innocence in them after showing us all of the shark evidence. The music starts getting dramatic when it shows us the boat.
As the last shot ends and the new one of Brody talking on the phone the suspenseful music ends abruptly. After Brody is done talking we see a shot of two guys opening a door and a very glad but suspenseful music starts playing. We see a lot of white purity in the background but amongst that white we see a yellow bus and other yellow colors meaning a bit of optimistic but more hazard feeling. Various shots of happy montage of people walking and setting up in town, we start to notice yellow appear more boldly but white still dominating the yellow color. Moving into the beach shot where Brody is walking with this fat man we see yellow surround Brody and the fat man showing us the happiness and hazard all around. The fat man and some people are wearing Turquoise symbolizing that everyone is calm, and the ocean. There are a few hints of green around the area like the green gazebo ceiling, or umbrellas giving a hint of misfortune.
When the news reporter starts walking we can clearly see every one at the beach is sitting down nice and neatly, in what appears to be a boundary. Yellow is seen as well as green showing us that the tourists are scared of nature, but there’s blue, which shows they’re calm about being there. The next shot is the yellow helicopter that passes by Vaughn’s head as he is looking very worried of the situation; the yellow helicopter that passed by convinced me he was scared. As Vaughn is walking towards his friend you hear a baseball game on the radio playing in the background foreshadowing future events. Vaughn orders his friend to take his family to go swimming, when they all hold hands Vaughns friend is seen wearing a blue bathing trunks to show confidence and security in his family while the wife is wearing all black showing that she fears the water.
We get a panoramic shot to show us that the family is all alone going into the ocean where no one is seen swimming. As the family goes in it cuts to a shot of two happy children wearing blue to show that it’s all calm and good. As it cuts to people being in the water we still see people unsure if they want to go in like the women in the middle wearing yellow bikini. After a few shots of happy people we see Brodys’ wife talk but the voice is not in sync with the mouth so it’s an ADR, it’s also too low to understand it’s probably not the same actor but a replacement that sounds kind of like the actor. Brody seems to be able to hear her just fine from the long distance and through all the ambient sound even though she whispered the sentence. More shots of people are seen but then it turns into the POV of the shark in the water. When Brody looks at his walkie-talkie he is surrounded by three huge dark green umbrellas, giving us a sense of misfortune.
We see the camera semi submerged in the water and you see that the water is green and you can’t see the people’s feet that are just 2-3 ft away. Following the semi submerged shot it cuts to the POV of the shark and we see a dramatic change in the pigment of the water. Not many people seem to be using their arms to stay afloat in the un-submerged camera and the submerged camera we see people trying to float and its not really crowded. When the shark is seen we see Brody next to the big Yellow gazebo with green around it showing that Brody is scared. In the various shots of everyone getting out of the water you notice these people in white suits helping people out of the water representing that they are nice guys. As you remember the foreshadowing radio baseball game well it talked about two runners in third and first then a fly ball deep into left field but it becomes and out. It foreshadowed how Vaughn goes straight for a good 4th of July but then is strikes out of luck when the shark attack appears.
A monstrous shark plagues the small town of Amity. After catching a shark everyone go back to bringing tourists. Brody, Hooper, and Quint are sure that the shark is still out there. They go and find the shark and kill it before the tourists are gone from Amity. My scene analysis has gone through most of the major points to the theme of the movie.
