What is known is that The Obsidian Hierarchy is a very ancient group that is intended to protect and safeguard the very existence of the Jiralhanae in every respect. They are social guardians that protect heritage and tradition. They are political guardians, going so far as to ensure that the current Chieftain of the Brutes serves the interest of the entire species, and even going further as to attempt assassinations on their own Chieftain of the Brutes or other high ranking Chieftains if they feel that they are going down the wrong path. This behavior was observed when the Obsidian Hierarchy attempted the assassination of Chieftain Dirk, the predecessor to Barrabus, the current Chieftain of the Brutes.
