10 000 Days album review
Album by: Tool
Review by: Bob Saget
As most of you know, I'm a huge fan of Tool. My uncle let me borrown the albums 10 000 Days and Undertow (which i will mak a review I figure'd I'd make a review!

Album Summary:
10 000 Days opens on a very strong note with Vicarious and carries it right into Jambi, which features a very rolling guitar line. It then calms down considerably with the incredibly bass-driven tracks Wings For Marie (Pt. 1) and 10 000 Days (Wings pt. 2). From there it picks right up again with The Pot. After that, there are two of Tool's classic intermission tracks, Lipan Conjuring and Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman). Rosetta Stoned carries on Tool's legacy of oddness, then Intension and Right In Two calm things down yet again. The Final track, Viginti Tres (23 in Latin i think), is again an intermission-type track, but it also equalizes Wings for Marie (6:11) and 10 000 Days (11:13), because Viginti Tres is 5:02. (5:02 + 6:11 = 11:13)

Musical Style:
In my opinion, Tool defies genre, they have an incredibly unique styling and each album has a different vibe or tone and that tone usually changes throughout the album. As unorthodox as their style may be, I still love it.

Musical Style Rating: 10/10

Vocal Style:
Maynard James Keenan has a very awesome voice. His voice on Vicarous is unlike anything I had ever heard him do before. On Wings For Marie parts 1 & 2 he does these incredible bass vocals that are a step in a totally different direction. The vocal intro to The Pot is again unlike anything I have heard him do. Overall, his voice changes are an excellent step in an awesome direction.

Vocals Rating 10/10

Guitar Style:
Adam Jones is a musical and artistical madman. He is a phenomenal guitarist and one of my idols. The main riff/s in Jambi have a rolling sensation to them that is just crazy, if you listen to the song you'll know what I mean. The lines in Right In Two are crazy melodical and awesome. All in all is all we are.

Guitar Rating: 10/10

Bass Style:
Justin Chancellor really fills his role as the base of the band. Wings For Marie parts 1 & 2 are so bass-driven my head exploded. There's even this one part in Jambi when everyone cuts out and its a little bass riff with a phaser or chorus effect, which is crazy and awesome at the same time. I love how in Tool, the bass always comes out because while he does follow the motions of the drums and guitar, his lines are always slightly different from the other guys'.

Bass Rating 10/10

Drum Style:
Danney Carey. That is all. If you do not know his work, google him. His drumming is mind blowingly-awesome, all the fuckin time. He continues his work from Aenima with the electronic drums, not to substitute for peices of his kit that are missing, but to create incredible lines with sounds you couldnt get from a regular kit.

Drums: 10/10

Alrighty then, picture this if you will

Individual song reviews:

Vicarious: The song is about how most of the population turns a blind eye to the world's issues to focus on their own lives, an unfourtunate truth. The instrumentals are amazing, and the vocals are crazy. In tradional Tool fashion, the end is the most insane part.

10/10

Jambi:
No idea what the song is about, but again, phenomenal work by the guys. I tried to learn the opening part, but the 8th note/16nth note transitions are hard to make.
10/10

Wings For Marie (pt. 1)/10 000 Days (Wings pt. 2):
These 2 songs are together because they are 2 halves of one 17:23 second song. They are about Maynard's mother, who was paralyzed for around 27 years (just under 10 000 days), then died. At least thats what i read when searching the lyrics. Anyway, I love these songs. The bass vocals are incredible, and the whole thing is just eargasm.
18/20

The Pot:
The theme of this song is hypocrisy. The vocal intro is crazeh sht, and the whole song follows the same way.
10/10

Lipan Conjuring:
wierd tribal chant shit, idfk

Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman):
again, idfk, a guitar line, a British/Australian doctor talking to anurse about a critical condition patient they know nothing about, then some feedback that segues into......

Rosetta Stoned:
carries directly on from Lost Keys, then goes its own way. Maynard talks really fast about seemingly random shit, songs a bit, more talking, then the rest of the song is Spartanly amazing.
10/10

Excerpt: Strapped down, my bed, feet cold and eyes red, I'm out, my head, am I alive, am I dead, can't remember the day you said, goddamn, shit the bed.

Intension:
Don't know the meaning, love the song. more bass and vocals than anything else really, for 7 minutes.
10/10

Right In Two:
I love singing this song especially. It talks about angels watching what humans have done and then critisizing our decions in a way.
10/10

excerpts: "Angels on the sideline, baffled and confused. Father blessed them all with reason, and this is what they choose"

"Silly monkeys, give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down."

"Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over peices of the ground."

Viginti Tres:
pretty much just noises and stuff. Defiitely the (-)Ions of 10 000 Days. Not a song to listen to stoned, or in pitch black, alone.

Overall: 9.5/10

if you are into alt. rock/metal, give these guys a listen

Bob Saget out.
