San Angeles was a human colony, first founded in 2410. Being an inner colony, it's population was typically higher than most outer colony planets. With a population of 52 million people, and a size only slightly smaller then that of Earth, San Angeles had many isolated pockets of people, typically living in vacation resort fashion. However, there were four highly dense population centers based around urban living, as well as dozens more smaller urban centers.

The four largest cities on San Angeles are (in order of sized based on population) are White River, Carver, New Havanna, and New Armstrong. Of the 80% of people on San Angeles living in high density urban centers, 25% live in White River, 21% live in Carver, 17% live in New Havanna, and 13% live in New Armstrong, with the last 4% living in smaller urban communities.

Of the 20% of the population lving in rural/remote locations, 9% live on farmland and 11% live on small resort-like communities of fewer than 100 people.

Early History

San Angeles was a human colony, first founded in 2410. It was discovered 6 years earlier by a deep space probe launched by the UEG. Upon initial discovery, research teams were dispatched to the planet to further analyze the planet for long term colonization. It was discovered that despite a different day length, and a different orbital period, this planet was nearly identical to Earth in terms of its ecosystems, climates, and even some natural phenomenons. San Angeles had its own version of the Aurora Borealis, which was initially nicknamed, and later finalized, as "Aurora Duplicalis"

Human-Covenant War

In late 2538, ONI, under direct orders from Director Constantine Spender, established several large military installations on San Angeles. The Installations were named for their locations, namely, ONI Installation Tropic, Arctic, Desert, and Mediterranean. The largest, and most secure of these installations was Mediterranean. Little is known about these installations, aside from the fact that they were the sole reason that ONI was interested in San Angeles.

San Angeles was attacked by The Covenant in 2540. It was later learned that The Covenant had discovered a large quantity of Forerunner artifacts beneath the planets surface, namely, in the exact same locations that ONI had established its installations. As it turns out, the Covenant invaded this world to get access to the Forerunner artifacts laying beneath the surface of this planet, artifacts, that Trust-controlled ONI Operatives had discovered, and had been trying to excavate for their own purposes. Due to the inherit difficulties of keeping a mass excavation a secret, as well as absolute ignorance of what was being dealt with, The Trust had intentionally provided The Covenant with all the information and intel that was needed to locate, and capture the Planet. It was the intention of The Trust to stage a large scale conflict between The UNSC and The Covenant, ensure that The Covenant defeat The UNSC, and then allow a battle-weary Covenant to excavate the planet. It would be at this time that The Trust would move in to steal The Forerunner technology that they had discovered.

The Covenant, once they had learned about San Angeles, had a very keen interest in this planet, which is why they devoted incredible resources into capturing this planet. As it turns out, The Covenant had originally intended to attack the Military outpost of Midnight. However, the attack of Midnight was reduced from a full-on tactical assault, to a simple diverson because they believed that ONI had already gathered a significant amount of information on the artifacts located on San Angeles, and would send considerable military power to defend it. The Covenant theorized that a two-prong attack would spread the UNSC thin, and allow for an easier capture of San Angeles. Reguardless, the attack on Midnight, which was planned to happen in 2540, never took place as a result of intervention on the part of Nighthawk and Anaconda. This allowed for a more effective military strength at San Angeles.

Ecosystem

San Angeles had a very diverse ecosystem, however, there was very little life on this planet, as the bio-diversity was a fraction of what was typically found on Earth. The reason for this was an issue of hot debate in the scientific community.

Despite this, in early 26th century, careful planning was carried out to increase bio-diversity, by introducing a new batch of bio-diversity to San Angeles, by moving animals from Earth to San Angeles, and placing them in near-indentical eco-systems.

Population

San Angeles had a population of 51 832 754 people. 80% of the population lived in large urban centers, while the other 20% lived in rural and/or remote locations. The following is a breakdown of ethnic background based on the most recent census.

  • Caucasian - 58%

  • Hispanic - 18%

  • Black - 11%

  • Asian - 9%

  • Native American - 4%

Director Vernette's Personal Notes

San Angeles was a very Earth-like planet. No atmospheric processing was needed to make this planet idea for human colonization, which was very odd, and very strange...but...nobody cared about that. Nobody stopped to think about the "why", and they just focused on the process of immediate and rapid colonization. That very fact alone should of raised red flags, but...nobody cared. But...how were we supposed to know what was laying beneath?

In terms of San Angeles, the planet itself was a great planet, and a very popular vacation resort leading up to 2539...but...ONI did a very good job in killing that, and turning this world into a highly defended military installation. I spent almost every waking moment trying to figure out what Spender was after on this planet, what he was hiding from me. Had I known then, what I now know about San Angeles...things would of been different. However...what is done is done, and there is no going back. What a shame.

I should point out...that the "why" in terms of "why this planet was a PERFECT habitat for humans" became very clear to me near the end of the Covenant invasion of this planet.
