Jacob could see that the Covenant was massing in front of the Bentz hotel. He smiled as the orange smoke encircled that entire area. The shortswords were on their way and would hit the Covenant army in full force. It was then that Jacob was contacted by the bomber pilots.

MacLaren: This is CPO MacLaren on fast approach to White River. ETA one minute til drop.

Jacob: Roger that CPO! Orange wall is up!

Jacob then switched to his radio to contact the rest of the troops.

Jacob: All forces, danger close! Hot drop in less than a minute, prepare for impact!

Jacob looked around, he noticed the marines reloading their magazines and preparing for the burst of missiles that was about to hit. It was then Jacob noticed that there was a lot of orange smoke not only outside his building...but surrounding it in the rubble. Jacob cursed under his breath and contacted MacLaren.

Jacob: CPO! Orange smoke mixed with friendlies!

MacLaren: Not much I can do, Captain! I have 30 seconds before I drop, either clear the men or order me to disengage.

Jacob shook his head, he knew he couldn't lose the air support...and if he did, they were in for a whole lot of trouble in the Bentz. Jacob desperately thought for ideas, and only one came to mind.

Jacob: CPO! Switch your computers to laser! I'm marking the location now!

MacLaren: Roger that, lock on in twenty!

Jacob grabbed his equipment and rummaged through the pack, eventually he picked up the laser-guided missile set. He immediately held the assault rifle in one hand and the laser in the other. The amount of orange smoke clouded Jacob's view and he only had one choice. He had to go into the fire.

Jacob didn't even think twice, he was a soldier, he had a duty to serve, and he knew what had to be done.

Jacob dove over the window and ran into the Covenant army.

MacLaren: Ten seconds, Captain! I need that lock on!

Jacob slid behind a downed truck and climbed on top of it as fast as he could. He knelt down, activated his thermal and looked into the mass of smoke. He saw a clear shot of where the bombs needed to land. Jacob activated the laser and placed it in the center of the the Covenant army.

At the same time, he was being fired upon by multiple grunts and jackals, but marines in the buildings were monitoring the radio and were helping Jacob. Grunts and jackals surrounding him, began to go down as marines from the building began to push towards the truck.

It wasn't about one soldier here, it wasn't about one man. It was about the entire battalion, everyone working together to save the lives of the White River civilians. Every soldier, understanding their duty, understanding the sacrifice that they could and may very well make to save the lives of others.

MacLaren: Lock on enabled, Captain! Dropping in two seconds!

It was here that Jacob held firm, he held his grip steady, he held the laser in place. And in a single instant, his thermal optics exploded as the bombs were dropped on the Covenant invasion, engulfing grunts, jackals, and elites in a fireball.

The force of the impact caused some of the cars to shake, and for Jacob to be sent flying off the truck and onto the ground behind him. The marines outside the buildings were taken back a bit as well, but they continued their fire.

The army invading the Bentz and the areas surrounded it was utterly obliterated, with pockets of resistance moving down the line. The ones fortunate, but unfortunate, to survive the bombs.
